PEACE ONE DAY. What if there were one day when all nations and peoples were supposed to lay down their arms in a global display of unity and nonviolence? You might not realize it, but there already is such a day — and it's next Wednesday!

The United Nations established September 21 as the International Day of Peace, but it took the prodding of filmmaker Jeremy Gilley to heighten international recognition of the concept and event. Gilley, founder of the organization Peace One Day, made an inspiring documentary, Peace One Day (2004), about his efforts. Available in the United States on DVD through Netflix, the film will be broadcast on the Sundance Channel on September 21 and September 30. It's family-friendly and worth a look if you happen to be interested in peace and international politics.
