BROKEBACK BRECHT? You know that Roundabout production of The Threepenny Opera? The one that now features Cyndi Lauper as well as Alan Cumming, Nellie McKay, and Jim Dale (with costumes by Isaac Mizrahi)? Gawker calls it "the gayest thing on Broadway this season," but I'm not so sure. (Not that there'd be anything wrong with that.)
Remember, this is Broadway, where Lestat and Tarzan will also open soon. And, though it's expected to close January 8, Souvenir has already made its mark.
And then there's Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life. "When she beckons, Broadway cultists heed the call," wrote Ben Brantley, who pronounced the show "a must-have ticket for aficionados of the American musical." Chew on that, Gawker!
No matter where it ends up on the Kinsey scale, The Threepenny Opera sounds like it could be great. Tickets go on sale in January. And maybe there'll finally be a Gayest Thing on Broadway category at the Tony Awards next year. From the looks of it, I'm sure the competition would be very stiff.
