TRANSIT STRIKE: UNFAIR FARES. Mayor Bloomberg recently proclaimed that strike-time visitors to New York can proudly declare that they lived through history, or something to that effect. If you want to make that claim, be ready to pay a price. Yesterday evening, after enjoying Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a visiting friend tried to hail a cab for herself and her two terrific kids from midtown to the Upper West Side. Normally, with a meter, the trip would probably cost about $10. Last night, with the zone plan, the same trip could have cost up to $45, which was the first rate she got from a cabbie. My friend passed that up but settled for a $30 fare to travel no more than three miles. Meanwhile a $5 van came and went. That would have cost her $15 but probably taken much longer.

Where's Chitty when you need her?

BTW, I saw "Chitty" on Sunday just before the strike. The show was utterly devoid of heart. A comparable event would be to perhaps stage "Knight Rider, the Musical" where the main concept is that the familiar KITT car appears on stage doing it's usual tricks. The only shining star in the fog of a show was the actress who played the Baroness. She was absolutely great!

Was the Baroness played by Jan Maxwell? She's interviewed by Melissa Rose Bernardo at http://www.broadway.com/gen/Buzz_Story.aspx?ci=513086.
