wtf?!? got to be in the boroughs....

David Marc Fischer said...

Yes, it's in one of the five boroughs--actually, Manhattan. And here's a bonus: It isn't in a zoo.

Looks a little Central Park West-y.

Head downtown.

I got it. I got it.

You were in a park downtown from Riverside with some cute animal signs and nifty lamps that might possibly be gas lamps, but probably aren't in this day and age, which is near some fairly tall early 20th century buildings.

Oh, I'm pretty sure they're gaslights!

OK, based on the gas lamps (and the information on the internet), I'd say that is City Hall Park.

Although this was not how I found it, you should try doing a Google image search for "nyc park gas lamps" or "nyc park animal signs".

Congratulations, david -- you're hot! The pictures were taken in City Hall Park, where gaslights were installed in 1999 (according to http://www.forgotten-ny.com/LAMPS/more%20old%20lamps/gaslite.html, to name one source).

Here's a short item, with photo, about the gaslights and the fountain they illuminate: http://www.urban75.org/photos/newyork/ny536.html

Here's a press release about City Hall Park: http://www.nyc.gov/html/om/html/99b/pr396-99.html

The animal signs were part of a public art project by Julian Opie called "Animals, Buildings, Cars and People." It's documented at http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/attractions/public_art/exhibits/opie_show/index.html
