MORE TOP PHOTOS. Here's a gallery representing the top photos in the Photo of the Year 2005 contest run by World Press Photo, which seeks "to encourage high professional standards in photojournalism and to promote a free and unrestricted exchange of information."
As is the case with these journalism awards, the images show some very dismal, distressing aspects of the world. It's important that photographers secure such records of poverty, violence, and illness, but it's sad to see few uplifting images. Thank goodness for Arts and Entertainment!
