I think I recognize one of the pebbles. Are you at Astoria Park and the East River?

David said...

Coney Island?

Maybe you strolled down the boardwalk to Brighton Beach?

David Marc Fischer said...

Nice try, Gary...but no.

David, nope.

And Debbie? That would be moving in the wrong direction.

Are you in one of the five boroughs?

David Marc Fischer said...

I am and I was. My plan for this is always to use a Big Apple location. I suppose there can always be an exception...but this isn't it!

How about Nortons Point in Seagate?

David Marc Fischer said...

A good and understandable guess, Dolph...but no. Still, you're "moving in the right direction."

OK, let's cross a bridge for a guess. The beach at Great Kills Park in the Gateway National Recreation Area on Staten Island.

David Marc Fischer said...

Gateway? Wrong way.

I'm not sure which direction we should be moving in so I'm just going to guess the Water Taxi Beach at Hunter's Point.

Or, even though it looks too pebbly, maybe one of the Rockaway beaches?

David Marc Fischer said...

You'd do much better with Hunter's Point than with the Rockaways, Debbie.

Orchard Beach?

David Marc Fischer said...

No, Scott, it's not The OB. Too cold up there!

Just north of Socrates Sculpture Garden in a little cove where the LIC Boating Club (or some such name) let's people take out kayaks. The rocky beach looks like your picture.

Is that the Hudson River?

David Marc Fischer said...

Dolph, I wasn't there, but it's possible that the similarity is meaningful.

Debbie, it's not the Hudson River. But thank you for asking.

There's another little cove, just east of Empire Fulton Ferry State Park in DUMBO. Same type of rocky beach. Warmer?

David Marc Fischer said...

Possibly, Dolph. Can you be more specific?

How about on Randall's Island facing Queens near the Triborough bridge.

The entrance is at the corner of Main St and Plymouth St just below the Manhattan Bridge.

Congratulations to Dolph for figuring out where I was--in Brooklyn by the Manhattan Bridge! The answer that I was looking for was Brooklyn Bridge Park, but Dolph got close enough for me even though he didn't offer the name. Dolph also enlightened me by writing (correctly) that the site is east of Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park, which is under the Brooklyn Bridge. I had thought that Brooklyn Bridge Park was to the north, but the maps (and Dolph) tell me otherwise.

As you can see from the pictures, there's a small pebble beach (suitable for kayaks) as well as a small sandy beach closer to the east tower of the Manhattan Bridge. They're mini-environments that can "transport" a visitor.

I snapped my shots on the way to Movies With a View, a series of free screenings at Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park on Thursday nights. It was fun to watch The Wizard of Oz projected in such a way that the high tower in Oz was in alignment with the eastern tower of the Brooklyn Bridge. Other movies in the series include Pee-wee's Big Adventure (7/27) and Raiders of the Lost Ark (8/17), with The Warriors (8/24) winding things up on August.

It's a funny thing--Brooklyn Bridge Park is supposed to expand along the shore of the East River, but at the moment, if you walk in Brooklyn from the Brooklyn Bridge to the Manhattan Bridge, it seems that you only enter Brooklyn Bridge Park when you're around the Manhattan Bridge. Poor Manhattan Bridge--no respect at all!
