That doesn't look one bit like you.

Well, don't blame me just because I wear different earrings....

Across from PS1, on I guess it's Jackson Avenue?

David Marc Fischer said...

No...but definitely a good guess!

Theater for the New City on East 10th Street?

David Marc Fischer said...

Cooler.

Not 5 Pointz ... but is Queens a warm location?

David Marc Fischer said...

Yes it is, Dolph!

The 43rd Street wall on the side of Nelson's Christmas (formerly Nelson's Hardware) in Sunnyside?

Looks like Red Grooms to me. Is it Tut's Fever Movie Palace at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens? If it is, I have to say I'm amazing! If it's not, then not so amazing.

David Marc Fischer said...

Dolph and Debbie: Good guesses both, with Debbie's being the warmer.

You're all amazing.

Were you inside or outside?

David Marc Fischer said...

Outside.

were you in astoria?

David Marc Fischer said...

Yes, Gary.

Is this on a wall at a school?

David Marc Fischer said...

No, Dolph--but that's a good guess!

Anonymous said...

were you north of 30th Ave?

David Marc Fischer said...

Yes, Gary: I was.

Were you at the Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden?

David Marc Fischer said...

Nope--no one has ever seen my mug there.

yuk yuk yuk
OK, let's try to pinpoint the location. Were you West of 31st Street?

David Marc Fischer said...

No, Gary.

Do Amtrak/Conrail trains pass above the wall that contains this graffiti?

Anonymous said...

Wow, I'm really sorry.
I meant "contain these graffiti?"
mea culpa.

David Marc Fischer said...

I don't think so, Dolph....

Anonymous said...

were you East of Steinway St.?

David Marc Fischer said...

No, Gary.

Anonymous said...

Is this near or in Socrates Sculpture Park?

David Marc Fischer said...

Debbie: Not in, and not very close at this point in the game.

Let's reduce Gary's Queens geography advantage a little. It's between the N train (31st st) and Steinway on the Ditmars side of 30th Ave. in North Astoria.

Thanks for the help, Dolph, but that Queens geography is way too confusing with all those streets, avenues and drives with the same number. I do think I may have caught a glimpse of the mural(?) in the mapquest aerial view, though.

David Marc Fischer said...

That sounds about right, Dolph...though even I am getting confused!

Well, I'm completely mystified, so, i'll keep narrowing the grid. Were you north of the Grand Central?

Scott said...

No clue whether this is close, physically, but here goes:

Outside Astoria Performing Arts Center on Steinway Street?

David Marc Fischer said...

Yes, Gary--which means no, Scott.

David Marc Fischer said...

But that guess wasn't bad, Scott.

Were you on the set of Sesame Street at the Kaufman Astoria Studios?

David Marc Fischer said...

No...sorry!

Anonymous said...

Frank Sinatra School for the Arts?

David Marc Fischer said...

Impressively warm, Debbie!

Anonymous said...

Devry Institute of Technology? Was it physical or conceptual warmth in that last guess? Can you say?

David Marc Fischer said...

Dolph: I think your Amtrak/Conrail guess might be warmer than I originally let on. I'm looking into that.

David Marc Fischer said...

Dolph, the answer to your Amtrak/Conrail question is now "yes." Sorry about my failure on that one....

Interesting, I shared this today with a teacher who lives off Ditmars and she confirmed that it is definitely on the wall of a train overpass. So, the question is: which overpass? How about the one at 35th St and 23rd Ave?

Anonymous said...

Um, David? Was my guess so pitiful that it doesn't even merit a "cooler"?

Okay, sorry to "swoop in" Dolph, but it looks like it's a mural done by this woman's students at Ditmars Blvd in Queens, underneath the N-W train:

Yes, it's true: Debbie has employed a swoop to come up with just about the perfect solution for this particular challenge (excluding a street-by-street drive through Astoria): the blog entries by NYJenn, who supervised the creation of the mural by the Ditmars stop of the Astoria line, which happens to run under the New York Connecting Railroad. Well done!

The mural is a fascinating pastiche of art by kids from the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in Long Island City. After taking the shots under the direction of an Astorian friend from high school and college, I had fun arranging the photos for your consideration; I've added some of the other pictures I took.

Of course, I screwed up royally by not saying "yes" to Dolph when he asked, "Do Amtrak/Conrail trains pass above the wall that contains this graffiti?" I basically responded with a wishy-washy "I don't think so, Dolph...." and only self-corrected about two days later. (Perhaps you heard me say "D'oh!")

I feel bad about my screw-up and I gladly welcome feedback on whether my failing messed up anyone's chances or ended up wasting anyone's time. I also welcome feedback on any other mess-ups of mine over the course of the competition so far. I really want this to be fun and educational and not demoralizing for anyone. You're all amazing--even with my sucky answer you had narrowed down the zone pretty quickly and come up with a possible Sinatra connection!

Come on, we all know it is just a friendly fun game...well, except for that Debbie. She is just too amazing and I think she should be tested for doping.
