PETER BOYLE (1935?-2006). Here's to Peter Boyle, an actor who could give both Boris Karloff and Gene Kelly a run for their money.

I'm reminded of a MAD magazine parody of Boyle's 1970 breakthrough "Joe," probably titled "Schmoe" or something. It was a classic case of a young MAD reader accepting the parody without having even a chance to access the original subject.

Funny the things one remembers. At one point Schmoe threatens and then proceeds to strangle a hippie to death. "Death? Sure I'll try it," bleats the hippie. (Was he clouded by little cartoon fleas?) "What do you mean, you'll 'try it?'" Schmoe growls.

"Hey man, I'll try *anything* once."
