WHERE WAS I? As always, it's somewhere in the five boroughs. Work on the puzzle (it's not very hard) and leave your guesses in the comments section.

I'll save Gary a guess...were you in Manhattan?

David Marc Fischer said...

No, no, yes....

American Museum of Natural History?

David Marc Fischer said...

No. I'd say Scott is the warmest so far. But of course we expect no less from the WWI? leader!

Is this in a church?

David Marc Fischer said...

The church of Jeane Dixon? No, sorry!

Though to some it might be considered something of a holy place.

I KNEW I would get abuse for that, but I put myself out there for the sake of the game.

Is this indoors?

David Marc Fischer said...

That's the kind of gutsy playing I'd expect from the very first champion of the game, Debbie!

It is not indoors.

Bryant Park?

I can't take the suspense anymore! Is it Bryant Park or not???

David Marc Fischer said...

That's strange...I thought I'd already answered Gary with something along these lines:

"Welcome back, Gary! Your guess is the warmest now."

Sorry about whatever happened to that.

Is this a temporary or permanent fixture?

David Marc Fischer said...

I'd classify it in the latter category.

Thanks for the welcome back. I've missed playing.

My new guess is Grace Plaza 43rd and 6th.

Gary, between you and ebhearn you might be on to something.

SUNY College of Optometry?

Warmest so far, Gary!

Salmon Tower (York & Sawyer, 1927) houses NYU's Midtown Center for Continuing Education. Note the months (with corresponding zodiac sign) around the entrance, and the figures above representing the professions.

42nd between 5th and 6th, north side.

Oh yeah!

Thanks for posting the sign for Saggitarius in honor of my Birthday!

David Marc Fischer said...

Way to go, Debbie! Besides being yet another example of archery artwork in the Big Apple, the Sagittarius/December sign is at the base of both zodiac/calendar archways at the north and south entrances to the Salmon Tower. (I took the puzzle picture on the north side.) The building is next to the SUNY College of Optometry.

I was, to be honest, a little muddle-headed when I wrote that the building might be considered a holy place to some. But it's true that, since 2003, it's been the post-Columbus Circle home of the much loved and venerated bookstore Coliseum Books. Coliseum's days, I'm sorry to note, once again seem to be numbered.

Here is Emily of Emdashes on the subject. Here's WFMU's The Iowa Firecracker. And here's something than can make you feel really old: A nostalgic farewell to Coliseum from someone who only knows it by its current location!

And this article suggests that the relocated Gotham Book Mart might also be endangered.

Q: Why is it so hard to break into the Salmon Tower?

A: Because of the lox.

Be honest...the only reason you picked this location was because you were dying to tell that joke, yes?

Continuing my honesty campaign, I have to admit that I did not do this to honor ebhearn's birthday (though I hope you all do anyway--it's December 17 and, from the looks of it, well on the way to becoming a federal holiday). And I did not do this to tell the joke either--I actually didn't realize that the building was called the Salmon Tower!

Of course, I do hope you all enjoyed the joke. Someone had to make it.
