THE HOST. Trapezia and I finally caught up with the South Korean monster flick The Host in Chelsea Friday night. The movie won't be to everyone's tastes (cf. Scoboco) but if you have a hankering for a cheesy allegorical Asian eco-horror/comedy movie that's not nearly as harrowing as Save the Green Planet, this might be just the ticket for you.
The concept--inspired by an actual incident--is pretty basic: amphibious pollution monster terrorizes Seoul. But the telling of the story plays with such elements as folklore, family comedy, ecological angst, South Korean sociopolitics, and the relationship of South Korea and the United States with originality and even wisdom and sensitivity. Plus, there's archery!
