INGMAR BERGMAN (1918-2007)

Has any director been as accomplished in theater and motion pictures as Ingmar Bergman? He is very much associated with treating "serious" themes with "serious" imagery, but I think his manner with cast and crew might also set him apart as a creative force. (And, yes, he was noted for his intimate relationships with actresses....)

Here Bergman speaks with Dick Cavett.

I'm hesitant to write much about Bergman's large body of work because I've still got a lot to see. Out of what I have seen, two very different films stand out in my memory: the allegorical and austere (but not humorless) The Seventh Seal...

...and the warm and very sympathetic family portrait Fanny and Alexander.

And, of course, there are the parodies of and tributes to Bergman that turn up in many places including Woody Allen's work and the short De Duva. I didn't find De Duva on YouTube, so here, perhaps appropriately, is the end of Allen's Love and Death.

I'm reminded of a classic SCTV bit: Martin Short as Jerry Lewis in Bergman's "Scenes From an Idiot's Marriage."
