ROOTS OF JAPANESE ANIME

Today the Japan Society launches four consecutive evenings of screenings that offer a glimpse of the Dawn of Japanese Animation.

After writing about MOMA's Milos Forman fest, J. Hoberman of The Village Voice turns to the Japan Society program and remarks, "Suggestive of Japanese woodcuts, the musical cartoons in which funny animals sing popular songs are among the most charming early talkies I've ever seen." There are many other types of films in the programs; David Wilentz goes into greater detail for The Brooklyn Rail.

And here's one of the films to be screened: Harvest Festival.
