WHERE WAS I? As usual, it's somewhere in New York City. Anyone can play; just leave your guesses in the comments using a distinct moniker so we can tell you apart from the other players. Enjoy!

Were you in a subway station?
Yes, Deborah!
Is this detail of the eye of an animal?
Is it 59th & Lexington by the 4,5 express trains?
Yes, David, it's the eye of an animal.
But no, Deborah--it's not 59th & Lex by the 4/5 trains.
Long time no play, but I'm going to suggest that you were at the Delancey Street-Essex Street subway station.
Hey, Gary, that's one helluva swoop--months in the making.
Bonus point to the first person to name the work and the artist.
Shad Crossing, Ming Fay (2004)?
Yes, Debbie, it's Shad Crossing, by Ming Fay!
You can find more info about it here.
The New York area's real-life shad population seems to be threatened, but the corrective measures being taken might not be very wise--judging from this recent article in The New York Post.
Nevertheless, a Shad Fest will be held in Inwood Hill Park on May 3, 2008 as part of Drums Along the Hudson.
