NATIONAL SPELLING BEE 2008 CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND

Scroll down in this post for video of numb nuts/numbnuts/numnah—plus a link to video of EUONYM. Congrats, Sameer—and all the rest of you spellers!

Tia Thomas walked off with oxylophytic. (People are criticizing her, but she's well-prepared...and she's also dealing with having the number 13. So cut her some slack.)

Sameer Mishra sailed through sinicize.

Sidharth Chand spat out aptyalism.

* * *

Tia Thomas flubbed opificer. Trouble for Tia!

Sameer Mishra
spells blood. He's got hyphaeresis. Tia's out!

First-timer Sidharth Chand gets Kulturkampf. This could be a big break for the Chandster. It is!

* * *

Sameer Mishra has a cheesy word: taleggio. Mmmmm...risotto in the sentence! He gets it!

Sidharth Chand gets introuvable—and finds his way through it!

Round 15

Sameer (we're on a first-name basis now) gets esclandre and SCORES!

Sidharth fails to find his way through prosopopoeia.

So this could be it for Sameer, who gets guerdon—and carries the burden. He's the winner on his fourth attempt! Way to go, Sameer—who scored the top prize despite his Round Two mispelling of sudation. Crazy!!

Here's Sameer's "numb nuts" moment, destined to compete with EUONYM in its virality.

Congrats to Sameer! You did a great job. Thanks too, for this fun and humorous moment. Your family must be proud. Heck, we're all proud of you! Best to you, and I hope you do become a surgeon. I'd let you operate on me!
All the kids did a great job, and should be proud of what they did!

Congratulations to all who reached the last 16. Watching live from New Zealand it was compulsive viewing. The work put in by all concerned must have been tremendous. As each one dropped off I felt their pain, disappointment and frustration. At the point where there were only three left I expected Tia Thomas to win. She was naturally positive and confident and radiated a great personality. When that one letter tripped her up I too felt her bitter disappointment and even shed a tear or two. A great effort from them all and I salute you Tia Thomas
