OH, DAVEY... (AND GOLIATH)

Dick Sutcliffe, the man responsible for my Lutheran education, passed away on May 11.

Sutcliffe created the animated children's television program Davey and Goliath, in which young and foolhardy Davey lived under the delusion that his dog, Goliath, could speak English very slowly (like Goofy, but without the chuckling). The series inspired the live-action art film He Was Once as well as the funniest gag in Attack of the Killer Tomatoes...and it introduced me to the hymn "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" and inspired gales of laughter between me and The Other Dave.

Here's the famous episode "Lost in a Cave." Note that when Davey says the cave is cool, he really means that the cave is cold. Also, the acting is a little wooden.

And here's some of "He Was Once"—with Todd Haynes!
