WHERE WAS I? The results are in! Broadway expert Myra dominated this year's Tony special, collecting a point for the best score, collecting another point for doing better than I did, and consequently surging into the first-place position, ahead of the formidable Debbie! Deborah didn't do so well, but she gets a salute from BAT headquarters for merely daring to take on Myra!

Incidentally, tonight should be a very good night to see a recent Tony winner. The last time I checked, there were still seats available for Gypsy.

And anyone who just happened to be at the ceremony should feel free to share their experiences in the comments.

And Debbie, Gary, and Scott can still send in their own photos.
16 Myra (Attendance Award plus one unredeemed WWI? credit)
15 Debbie (Gold Medal and Attendance Award plus unredeemed Silver Medal and WWI? and Bronze Medal credits, plus February 2008 WWI? credit and a March 2008 redeemable point; includes two bonus points)
12 Gary (Silver Medal plus three unredeemed WWI? and one unredeemed Silver Medal credits)
10 Scott (Two Gold Medals plus two unredeemed WWI? credits)

Congrats to Deborah for taking a stab at it and choosing quite a few of the winners!

I was at the first post-Tonys performance of new Best Musical "In The Heights" - upon Lin-Manuel Miranda's entrance, he got a long round of applause, leaving him quiet on stage for more than a few moments before resuming his rap introduction to the show and its neighborhood. The sold-out crowd gave entrance applause to many of the show's leads, and gave an extra enthusiastic response throughout the whole show. It shined. It really is a colorful lively portrait of Washington Heights' residents and their latino backgrounds.

A friend went to the first post-Tony performance of Gypsy where their 3 Tony-winning actors received thunderous extended applause. A standing ovation for Patti LuPone which only ended when she finally broke character and turned to the audience and nodded in acknowledgement. Laura Benanti was overwhelmed with emotion at the pause of recognition she received.

The Awards show itself was quite entertaining and funny, due to the increase in musical performances and the commercial bumpers that featured Whoopi in many of the still running musicals (Phantom, Spamalot, Spring Awakening, A Chorus Line). The announcement of winners and speeches were more meaningful to me this year due to having seen most of the competitors.

If you are looking for some post-Tony viewing, I highly recommend
musical: In The Heights
play drama: August: Osage County
play comedy: The 39 Steps & Boeing, Boeing

Shows I also loved that are closing soon: Cry-Baby (closing 6/22), Sunday in the Park with George (closing 6/29), Rent (9/7)

There are tons of shows waiting in the wings for the 2008-2009 season!! [title of show] (July), Tale of Two Cities (August), Shrek (November), 13, White Christmas, Godspell, West Side Story, and plays like Pal Joey, All My Sons, and transferring from off-Broadway 'reasons to be pretty' New shows are snapping up theatres as they become available!!
