The BAT Challenge: Where Was I?

As usual, it's somewhere in The Big Apple. This one could be tough, so remember that active guessing yields more hints. Anyone can play by leaving guesses in the comments section, being sure to use a moniker distinct from those of the other players.

Were you downtown Manhattan?

David Marc Fischer said...

No, Ellen, I wasn't downtown Manhattan.

Deborah said...

Were you under a boardwalk?

David Marc Fischer said...

Nope...not under a boardwalk, Deborah.

Were you at a train station?

Were you in Manhattan?

David Marc Fischer said...

I was neither at a train station nor in Manhattan, Ellen.

Staten Island?

David Marc Fischer said...

Not Staten Island either, Deborah.

Queens?

David Marc Fischer said...

I wasn't in Queens either, Ellen.

The Bronx?

David Marc Fischer said...

Not the Bronx, Ellen.

Well David, could you have been in Brooklyn?

David Marc Fischer said...

Yes, Ellen!

Downtown Brooklyn?

David Marc Fischer said...

The answer, Ellen, might depend on one's definition of Downtown Brooklyn. Regardless, I'd say you're getting warm.

Prospect Park?

David Marc Fischer said...

Prospect Park is cooler, Deborah.

Metro Tech Center?

David Marc Fischer said...

Metro Tech is warmer than Prospect Park, Ellen.

Were you in a Park?

The Brooklyn Heights Promenade?

David Marc Fischer said...

I believe I was arguably in a park. Between that guess and the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, you're getting very warm, Ellen.

Entrance to the Brooklyn Bridge?

David Marc Fischer said...

Still warm, Ellen--but too close to Cadman.

Fulton Ferry landing?

David Marc Fischer said...

Very warm, Ellen, but not close enough to Sherman.

Atlantic Terminal Mall?

Washington Plaza?

David Marc Fischer said...

Both cooler, Ellen....

Brppklyn Law School?

Anonymous said...

oops...Brooklyn Law School?

David Marc Fischer said...

I like the alternative spelling, but either way it's not close enough to Beekman.

David Marc Fischer said...

Okay...I'm going to keep this open a little longer, but only for those who've guessed so far. David gets one more guess, Deborah gets two more guesses, and Ellen gets three more guesses....

Were you near the East River????

Deborah said...

Brooklyn Borough Hall?

David Marc Fischer said...

Yes, I was near the East River, Ellen--much closer than I was to Brooklyn Borough Hall, Deborah.

DUMBO?

David Marc Fischer said...

DUMBO is cooler--even farther from Sherman than the ferry landing.

Picking the correct street will be good enough for a win....

I give up! Only the Dead Know Brooklyn.

David Marc Fischer said...

Good one, Deborah, but you still have one guess left....

Furman Street?

David Marc Fischer said...

You got it, Ellen!!!!

It's a piece of graffiti at the National Cold Storage Building at 66 Furman Street, down by the old Brooklyn Heights waterfront just south of the ferry landing.

As this blog entry shows, the building was the subject of a poem by Harvey Shapiro.

Thanks to all the players for participating, and to Deborah and Ellen for hanging in there!

WOW - and I had one guess left. Please explain the confusing references to Sherman & Beekman that threw me off! Was it the Sherman Statue near West 4th? Beekman towers, Beekman grocery store, your friend Beekman who lives nearby...???

David Marc Fischer said...

Cadman, Beekman, and Sherman are all street names that, like Furman, end in -man.

Sherman is on Staten Island, by the way.

Sorry if that was too confusing. I really was trying to help without giving things away!

Oh. Well now that you explained it, it seems pretty obvious!
