Let's travel to 1981, when (if (human) memory serves) Centipede and Pac-Man were start-of-the-art videogames and computer undergrads at the University of Virginia (UVA) learned to program using BASIC and FORTRAN and COBOL and PASCAL—on punchcards run through the school's computer.

I remember it well--sort of. I learned FORTRAN via punchcards in 1968. Also COBOL and Assembler in 1978. But when I got my first job as a programmer in 1979 we used terminals.
