With all this talk about what defines torture, I’d like to know what kind of person does this to another person. That is, what kind of person strips someone, hoods him, slaps him, slams him against a wall, places him in “stress positions” or isolation for prolonged periods of time, intimidates him with a dog, and yes, straps him onto a board and pours water down his throat in order to make him think he is about to die. And does this repeatedly, for weeks and months at a time.Related: Ghosts of Abu Ghraib
I would be mortified if my child grew up to think these actions aren’t torture. But I would find it unspeakable to know that I had raised a child capable of inflicting this behavior on another human being, no matter how despicable that person’s presumed crime.

Whodunnit
Among the respondents to the New York Times article "Interrogation Memos: Inquiry Suggests No Charges" (May 6, 2009) and editorial "The Torture Debate: The Lawyers" (May 7, 2009) is my friend Sasha Nyary of Heading Home Again with these thoughtful remarks:

I'll NEVER FALL IN LOVE AGAIN/SAVOY TRUFFLE
Last week, thanks to The Other Dave, I learned that two "color words" that rhyme are "green" and "tangerine." And then, with the help of Dave and Sasha, I discovered something about the Beatles song "Savoy Truffle." Just like Halloween, it's all about candy!
Looking for "Savoy Truffle" on YouTube, I found a single by Ella Fitzgerald pairing the song with Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "I'll Never Fall in Love Again." Not her best moment, but worth a listen.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN HARRY POTTER?
I worry about young Harry. After six books of adventures and many warnings from those around him, the boy still doesn't seem prepared to defeat Voldemort and his wicked minions--unless the battle happens to be a Quidditch match. And even then...you must admit...Potter's record is a bit...spotty.
But here's Sasha's very thoughtful take on it (with possible spoilers near the end) and a follow-up (with a spoiler about Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials) at Heading Home Again. Look out, Professor Trelawney!
And here's some strange video from Ellen featuring Emma "Trelawney" Thompson.
