SEE THE APPLE TREE! The last Encores! production of the season is The Apple Tree, featuring music by Sheldon Harnick and Jerry Bock, the songwriting team behind She Loves Me and Fiddler on the Roof. It's a grand finale.
The Apple Tree is an unusual show in that it consists of three one-act musicals; they are based on "The Diary of Adam and Eve" by Mark Twain, "The Lady or The Tiger?" by Frank R. Stockton, and "Passionella" by Jules Feiffer.
On Broadway, The Apple Tree starred Barbara Harris, Alan Alda, and Larry Blyden. This City Center production stars Kristen Chenoweth, Malcolm Gets, and Michael Cerveris, whose top-notch performances help to make the huge auditorium feel like a cabaret despite the chasm between the stage and the cheaper seats.
Encores! usually gets rave reviews from The New York Times; today's unusually glowing write-up might be only slightly overblown.
The Apple Tree is also the farewell production for Encores! music director Rob Fisher, so stay around after the exit music to salute the full orchestra and give him a warm sendoff.
Discount tickets can be acquired through Playbill.com and Theatermania.com and, possibly, other sources such as TKTS.
