THE CONFORMIST (1970), by Bernardo Bertolucci, explores fascist psychology and, through the good services of cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, introduces a cinematic counterpart to Munch's iconic image The Scream.
August 12-18
THE GANG'S ALL HERE (1943) showcases Busby Berkeley's style at its most outlandish with kaleidoscopic color, crazed choreography, Carmen Miranda, and a coterie of corny character actors. Short on storyline but swimming in silliness (with a surprisingly serious undertow), it's on a family-friendly double bill with another camp classic from the same period, the Maria Montez vehicle COBRA WOMAN (1944).
August 26-27
SEVEN SAMURAI (1954) is simply one of the great adventure epics of world cinema.
September 8
THRONE OF BLOOD (1957) transports Macbeth to medieval Japan with stunning results.
September 30-October 6
ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968) is a giant-sized spaghetti Western in which director Sergio Leone tosses Henry Fonda, Charles Bronson, Claudia Cardinale, and Jason Robards together with music by Ennio Morricone and a screenplay by Leone, Bertolucci, and Dario Argento.
