GET ON THE BIKE, MIKE. One of New York City's great mysteries: Why does the mayor pick on bicyclists? For some reason (or no reason at all), Michael Bloomberg has sicced the police on bicyclists even though automobiles (and their many law-flouting drivers) are a bigger--but more tolerated--problem.

On July 16, the environmental group Time's Up released a set of very reasonable demands entitled "Very Reasonable Demands Regarding the Future of Bicycling in New York City."

"Bicycling should be viewed not as a problem for the city, but as a solution to the city's problems," says Time's Up. Considering Bloomberg's record so far, bicycling should certainly be a campaign issue. If reason prevails, he and the rest of the city's power brokers will "see the light" and increase their support of bicycle riders.
