PRESS ONE DAY. Happy United Nations International Day of Peace! The occasion was ushered in last night with a screening of Peace One Day at the Ziegfeld Theater in Manhattan. Photographers flocked to the event, responding to high public interest in establishing even a single day of worldwide peace.

Actually, the photographers were there to do their part in the extensive photo-chronicling of Angelina Jolie, who appeared not with Brad Pitt but with her ex-husband Jonny Lee Miller. After the screening, each half of the ex-couple took turns describing initiatives being taken in recognition of the International Day of Peace, long championed by filmmaker Jeremy Gilley, who also happened to be present.

Over his years as a peace advocate, Gilley has learned the importance of joining with celebrities to get press coverage. But even the enlistment of Jolie and Miller might not have been enough to attract press attention in the United States. A Google News search for "Jolie" mainly yields gossip and fashion items but (so far) only one report tied to the Peace One Day event. Good going, India's NDTV.com!

And let's hear it for radiant activist Angelina Jolie, pictured in some of the above photos and also captured here as she strode down an aisle of the Ziegfeld Theater!

Tonight Peace One Day will be broadcast on the Sundance Channel [See also September 15, 2005], whose representative nearly brought down the Ziegfeld with an excellent joke about three-ways. (I kid you not.) Filmmaker Gilley says he is preparing a follow-up, entitled Peace One Day: The Sequel, that will incorporate footage of last night's event.

As of two years ago, at least 35 countries were involved in a stage of armed conflict, according to World Press Review, which sells a map depicting the situation for only $9.99. (That's right, only $9.99!) Even better, Nobelprize.org offers an amazing online interactive map illustrating the armed conflicts of the world over the past century or so. Play around with it — it's fun and educational!
