I WANT MY MNN! Channel surfers may be shocked when checking out Manhattan public access television this weekend. As they flip around, they're likely to find their screens filled with the following message (and approximate text layout):
Due to the possible collapse of an adjacent building, all MNN Facilities are closed until further notice. Unfortunately we will be off the air for such time until we are able to open the facilities and resume normal operations. There will be no regular tape or studio services for the duration of our closure. We are sorry for the inconvenience. To keep informed please check our website www.mnn.org or call our main phone line (212)757-2670.
There is national legislation that could end public access. It is at this time that we ask you to reflect on how valuable public access is to you and your community. This is what it would be like if the legislation passed and Manhattan Neighborhood Network was not able to provide you with channel time and production facilities to produce and air programs from you and the Manhattan community.

This is worrisome. It's easy to make snide remarks about the content and quality of public access TV (where "normal operations" should be understood as a relative term), but I've often found interesting programming on MNN. It remains a great opportunity for city folk who wish to gain TV experience and a place for viewers to get exposure to more diverse perspectives than are likely to be represented on the vast majority of channels.

So get well soon, MNN! And stay well, too. I wonder if some of the nearby TV studios might be able to lend a hand....

Here is more info about the general plight of public access, from the Alliance for Community Media.
