EXCERPT FROM THOMAS PYNCHON'S AGAINST THE DAY! It seems that a good place to go for breaking news about Thomas Pynchon's Against the Day is the (moderated) mailing list devoted to the works of another Long Island writer--William Gaddis. That's where scholar Steven Moore very generously shared word about the book back in June and, just yesterday, shared the passage from Against the Day that appears in the Penguin Press catalog.
The excerpt can now be found online at the Pynchon mailing list archives and the blog JR Enterprises Incorporated. As far as I can tell at a glance, the Penguin Press text differs only in that the Spanish is italicized and comes with those crazy-wonderful upside-down exclamation marks.
