GUITARCHIKS: ODETTA

The enduring and powerful Odetta recently performed on Governor's Island, opening a folk music series that will conclude next Saturday with a Woody Guthrie tribute. It sounds like a great time to take a ferry out there, hear some good music, and check out the island, but there are other opportunities this summer, too.

Odetta was a moving presence at an Anne Frank tribute I attended years ago at the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Here's a glimpse of Odetta performing at Newport.

And here she is performing some of "Water Boy," which was well-parodied as "Seltzer Boy" by Allan Sherman on My Son the Folk Singer.
