Tonight: Tribute to Odetta at Riverside Church

An open-to-the-public memorial tribute to singer, humanitarian, and Guitarchik Odetta is scheduled for Riverside Church starting at 7 pm tonight.

Those scheduled to appear include David Amram, Maya Angelou, Harry Belafonte, Oscar Brand, Tom Chapin, Guy Davis, Ruby Dee, Steve Earle, Wavy Gravy, Geoffrey Holder, the Holmes Brothers, Maria Muldaur and Marie Knight, Pete Seeger, Sweet Honey in the Rock, Josh White Jr., and Peter Yarrow.

Guitarchiks: Adele

The other night I heard a song on the radio and thought it was being performed by Guitarchik Feist. Turns out it was "Chasing Pavements" by Adele.

I might create a new musical category called Feist-alikes, for singers who sound like Feist. Of course, there just may be a chance that Feist sounds like someone else herself....

Odetta (1930-2008)

She said "With folk music, I can do my teaching and preaching, my propagandizing." And with music and her strong voice and presence she taught and preached and propagandized about hope and justice and respect for diversity. She'll surely be missed at the upcoming inauguration.

And she was a Guitarchik.

GUITARCHIKS: MARY KAYE Mary Kaye of the Mary Kaye Trio is among the permanently departed of 2007 who were recently mourned by Rex Reed in the New York Observer: "They were giant lures on the casino-lounge scene for two decades, and their devoted fans included Elvis Presley and Howard Hughes."

Mary Kaye was famous for playing a Fender Stratocaster but she seems to have preferred a D'Angelico.

Look for Bobby Troup in this clip presented by Dumpsterpiece Theatre.
