WHERE WAS DOLPH? This time, for the first time, we try to find Dolph...and there's a new twist, too: The winning point will be held in reserve for the next round!

As usual, it's in New York City. Anyone can play—just leave your guesses in the comments section using a distinct moniker (not Anonymous).

Gotta be one of the boroughs. Queens?

David Marc Fischer said...

Queens? Brrr! If only!

Scott said...

The Bronx?

The Path station at Ground Zero?

David Marc Fischer said...

Bronx? Brrronx! (Which means "No, sorry"!)

And that's good thinking, David, re the Path station at Ground Zero, but that's not it either.

Was Dolph downtown Manhattan?

David Marc Fischer said...

Not on this occasion, Ellen.

Brooklyn?

David Marc Fischer said...

Brooklyn? Brrr--wait a minute...it is in Brooklyn!

Rockaway Beach 105th Street?

View from an F train platform toward Red Hook?

Um, Scottie? I think Rockaway if considered Queens, but I could be wrong.

Dolph: Is this taken from a bridge?

David Marc Fischer said...

Ah, subway guesses!

Scott, you identify a specific subway station, so there is no doubt in my mind that your guess is in Queens. (I admit I run into trouble like that myself from time to time.)

Dave, your guess is in Brooklyn and it is cool.

Oh no--now, instead of chiding me, Debbie is chiding Scott and totally ignoring me!

Calling Dolph! Calling Dolph!

Where is Dolph?

Is that the Brooklyn Cyclones Stadium I see through the pseudo-porthole?

David Marc Fischer said...

Certainly not, Ellen!

Perhaps Dolph was readying to embark upon a Manhattan bound ferry near the Brooklyn Army Terminal?

David Marc Fischer said...

You can't fool me, Ellen! No such thing(s?)....

Were you in/near/looking towards Greenpoint?

Sorry for my brief absence, Teacher Happy Hour went a little late yesterday.

Boy this is sooo fun! Since I haven't scored a point, it seems since the Clinton Administration, I enjoy reading your frosty posts.

Debbie, I was not on a bridge. Myra you are starting to warm the chill on this board.

Behind the new "Edge" building complex in Williamsburg?

David Marc Fischer said...

Debbie, who do you want to answer that question?

Were you at the Newtown Creek Nature Walk?

Gowanus Canal?

Before any of us go on any further, allow me to salute Myra for finding Dolph at the recently opened Newtown Creek Nature Walk, conveniently located by the Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Greenpoint.

Dolph took some other excellent shots, with more obvious clues, that I figure I'll share soon. He might also want to share some of his nature walk experience here. I can say that Gary was in Dolph's posse, which disqualified Gary from participating in this round. I really liked Dolph's submission, so I figured the winning point would be applied in the next round to make up for Gary's disadvantage.

Congrats Myra on finding an unlikely and really incredible New York destination (particularly if you have a bike to ride there).

There are indeed more photos in my set, some with the NYC skyline rising above the waters of what should be remembered is a Superfund pollution site. Another skyline that is clearly seen from this vantage is Long Island City.

Other photos you didn't see, which might have postponed discovery a mite, include stone circles inscribed with Lanape place names for the surrounding areas. The stones are placed so that if you are standing and reading a name, you are facing the named place. More details at the DEP website brochure.

Many thanks to WWI and BAT for giving me this opportunity to share.

I still feel like I haven't won a point in this game since "Seinfeld" was in 1st run. David, if I win next week does that mean I can steal Myra's "postponed" point from today? ;-]

YAYYY!!! That makes the ridiculous number of hours I spent on this worthwhile. Even though the photos were very clear (compared to dim low res camera phone photos :) it was difficult to figure things out. In the first photo, I tried to identify the steeple in the distance and my best guess was St Anthony's of Padua (http://www.nyc-architecture.com/GPT/gpt021.htm). The photo file(s) fortunately included the timestamp of when it was taken=the afternoon, so I deduced from the direction of the sunlight, that the location was east and slightly south of St. Anthony's. The waterway that separates part of Brooklyn from Queens was in the right location but looking at google maps does not reveal any developed waterfront because the satellite images can be over a year old. After I found the waterway's name is Newtown Creek, I found other photos from the Newtown Creek Nature Walk opening (http://www.newtowncreekalliance.org/92907a.htm) that includes the exact railing and orange lamps in clues #2 & #3.

I thought you might be interested in how I figured it out, and hopefully you won't utilize all my secrets to beat me at future Where Was I?'s! In the process, I did learn a little bit more about Brooklyn and the layout of its neighborhoods.

Please do post the rest of the photo set!

That's some disclosure, Myra! Now everyone else now knows the genius behind your name. (But which photos had a time stamp?)

Anyway, Dolph, for the next one, just do what Myra did, only faster than anyone else, and you'll be sure to get that point. Thanks for being such a good sport even though it's been a frustrating stretch!!

Incidentally, if you scrutinize Newtown Creek using Google Maps, it sure looks like you can see something funky about the (infamously polluted) water. Or is it, as The Temptations sang, just my 'magination?

On google maps, I think the creek is reflecting sunlight that gives it a strange look.

The EXIF data on the Dolph's photos (the first few clues) say the image was digitized on November 24th about 2:15pm in the afternoon. Can't really use my sunlight/directional strategies if the photos are taken inside, or at night, or really closeup -- which yours usually are :)

Sorry Myra,

I thought MYRA but my hands typed MAYA. Note I didn't blame my feeble brain, just my feeble fingers!
