BROOKLYN BRIDGE TURNS 125! I totally screwed up going to tonight's Brooklyn Bridge Anniversary kickoff. I tried to get there in time for the fireworks, and tried to ignore the crowds pouring into the Fulton Street Station around 9:15pm as I tried to get to the waterfront, hoping against hope that they hadn't just seen the grand finale. But when I got to the South Street Seaport, I finally bit the bullet and asked a couple of bicyclists if I'd missed the show. I had...but I could still enjoy the view of the specially illuminated bridge with spotlights shooting into the sky around it. I thought I'd at least walk across the bridge in my own personal celebration, but pedestrian access was blocked as late as 9:40pm. So it was the uptown bus for me. And it was significantly detoured due to paving. But I digress...

Brooklyn Bridge events will take place all weekend—and some of them look great—but there's no substitute for walking across the bridge, preferably both ways, and, if time allows, also poking around the anchorages, most especially on the Brooklyn side. The weather this weekend could be excellent for daytime and nighttime crossings, so go for it—if not this weekend, then soon!

Here's a great Maykovsky poem inspired by the bridge. I love the lines
Brooklyn Bridge—
yes . . .
That's quite a thing!
And here's some of what I missed. Check out the hearts!
