Neal Hefti (1922-2008)

Matt Schudel of The Washington Post seems to have had some fun with the fact that the late Neal Hefti wrote the Grammy-winning theme for the TV series Batman as well as The Odd Couple. That's okay—I think Hefti himself liked to joke about composing the Batman theme—but it should be noted that those two themes are superior examples of the genre. As a result, there's a good chance you can hum each tune and have a positive association with both of them.

Try it.

But I'd like to take this opportunity to note Hefti's big band arrangements and compositions, drawing attention to the incredibly delicate Count Basie number Li'l Darling.
